Alongside the targeted excavation in the site of La Cotte, several of our team members are working on various aspects of material stored in the archive on Jersey. This archival material includes stone tools and faunal remains from McBurney excavations (1961-78) along with material from the extensive excavations that were undertaken by Marett and Burdo.
Work undertaken to date includes:
- Drs Matt Pope, Beccy Scott and Andy Shaw working on the stone tools from the ‘bone heap’ layers. Initial results were presented at the CAHO10 Workshop this year.
- Dr Geoff Smith has begun work on all bone material from the site; at present he is focussing on the ‘bone heap’ layers to tie into results from the stone tool analysis. Some initial findings will be presented at the Hominin-Carnivore Interaction Symposium.
- Dr Becky Wragg-Sykes has also begun work on the lithics from the upper horizons with funding from the Prehistoric Society and the Lithic Studies Society.
Further work and updates will be posted here throughout the duration of the project. Please check back and if you have specific questions you can contact our team through the Team Page.
